PATENT EXAMINER TRAINING (Continued)<br />

Programs for all Examiners Legal Practice <strong>and</strong> Procedure Training<br />

■■ <strong>Patent</strong> Examiner Refresher Training<br />

Courses developed to enhance patent examiners’ knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills in<br />

procedural <strong>and</strong> legal topics pertaining to patent examination. Participants<br />

may enroll in one or more courses in consultation with their supervisor.<br />

■■ Legal Lecture Series<br />

Training offered periodically to patent examiners based on major court<br />

decisions <strong>and</strong> office policies.<br />

■■ In-House <strong>Patent</strong> Law <strong>and</strong> Evidence Course<br />

Training for <strong>Patent</strong> examiners on authoritative court decisions on statutory<br />

issues under 35 U.S.C. §§ 101, 102, 103, <strong>and</strong> 112 <strong>and</strong> the h<strong>and</strong>ling of evidence<br />

during the examination of applications.<br />

■■ Negotiating in the <strong>Patent</strong> Examination Process<br />

An interactive lecture <strong>and</strong> workshop designed to teach the fundamentals<br />

of negotiating issues which arise during the patent examination process<br />

utilizing effective collaborative communication skills.<br />

■■ <strong>Patent</strong> Examiner Technical Training Program<br />

This program seeks public assistance in providing technical training to patent<br />

examiners within all technology centers. The <strong>Patent</strong> Examiner Technical<br />

Training Program is intended to provide scientists <strong>and</strong> experts as lecturers<br />

to patent examiners in order to update them on technical developments,<br />

the state of the art, emerging trends, maturing technologies, <strong>and</strong> recent<br />

innovations in their fields. Such guest lecturers must have relevant technical<br />

knowledge, as well as familiarity with prior art <strong>and</strong> industry practices/<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards in areas of technologies where such lectures would be beneficial.<br />

■■ Site Experience Education Program<br />

This program provides examiners the opportunity to visit real-world sites,<br />

such as Universities or Industries. They receive direct h<strong>and</strong>s-on education<br />

specific to the technology area they work in. This program seeks to put<br />

experts such as innovators, experts, scientists, <strong>and</strong> engineers together with<br />

the examiners at the sites where innovation is happening.<br />

■■ Continuing Education Series<br />

Training for patent examiners to enhance their technical <strong>and</strong> legal<br />

knowledge in the examination of patent applications.<br />
