<strong>and</strong> exemplify the values set forth in the <strong>USPTO</strong> Leadership<br />
Vision. The program was designed based on<br />
requests from employees wanting an agency-wide<br />
method to recognize their supervisors. In FY 2012, 50<br />
supervisors were presented with Leadership in Action<br />
Awards. Finally, an agency-wide mentoring program<br />
component of the LDP program was designed to<br />
provide access to mentoring opportunities to all<br />
<strong>USPTO</strong> employees.<br />
Advancements in <strong>USPTO</strong>’s Physical Workspaces<br />
The <strong>USPTO</strong> continues to excel in creating a workplace<br />
that is modern, attractive, safe, secure, <strong>and</strong> energy<br />
efficient as evidenced by of the following achievements<br />
in FY 2012:<br />
●● The <strong>USPTO</strong> partnered with the General Services<br />
Administration to program, design, <strong>and</strong> lead<br />
construction of the agency’s first satellite office in<br />
Detroit, Michigan. The Elijah J. McCoy Satellite<br />
Office opened on July 13, 2012 <strong>and</strong> will house 100<br />
newly-hired patent examiners, as well as a number<br />
of Administrative <strong>Patent</strong> Judges. Modeled after the<br />
interiors of the Alex<strong>and</strong>ria, Virginia campus facility,<br />
the space provides a Public Search Facility, several<br />
team rooms for interviews, <strong>and</strong> infrastructure that<br />
ties back into the campus. This is the first of three<br />
additional satellite offices the <strong>USPTO</strong> will construct<br />
in the upcoming years.<br />
PERFORMANCE AND ACCOUNTABILITY REPORT: FISCAL YEAR 2012<br />
<strong>USPTO</strong>’s Elijah J. McCoy Satellite Office in Detroit<br />
opened in July 2012.<br />
●● The <strong>USPTO</strong> continued to closely monitor its energy<br />
consumption <strong>and</strong> created an energy dashboard<br />
documenting the campus’ electricity use each<br />
month. The dashboard was displayed on our “Green<br />
at <strong>USPTO</strong>” website <strong>and</strong> on the lobby-level kiosks,<br />
complete with green tips showing employees how to<br />
reduce energy consumption at both work <strong>and</strong> home.<br />
●● The campus was the recipient of the Energy Star<br />
2012 award.<br />

●● The <strong>USPTO</strong> won a 2012 Energy <strong>and</strong> Environmental<br />
Stewardship Award from the DOC for its ability to<br />
measure <strong>and</strong> increase recycling to a 54 percent<br />
waste diversion rate, thereby exceeding the<br />
President’s Executive Order 13514 of recycling at<br />
least 50 percent by FY 2013. See Figure 28.
