Trova Heffernan and Lori Larson, my teammates at the Legacy Project,
have been amazing, together with Carleen Jackson and Laurie Mott of
the Heritage Center. Special thanks to Sally Gorton, a former reporter
whose vocabulary doesn’t include “no comment.” Doubtless I have forgotten
to acknowledge someone. It always happens. My apologies and
sincere thanks.
While the Slade Gorton International Policy Center, its host, The National
Bureau of Asian Research, the Gorton Legacy Group and other
donors helped fund the printed edition of this book, it is in no way an
“official” biography. No one outside the Office of the Secretary of State
asked for or received any editorial oversight.
One last word about Thomas Slade Gorton III: He was an open book,
warts and all, and never once attempted to steer or interfere. No biographer
could ask for more. By any objective assessment, Washington State
is lucky a young man opted out of the fish business and decided to go
West.
