In the first decade, the Department for<br />

Adults (a Part of the whole Department)<br />

was situated in the Military Hospital - there<br />

worked civil doctors as well soldier doctors.<br />

The team was as follows: Prof. S. Piątkowski,<br />

Ass. Prof. Józef Kamiński (1923–1982),<br />

Dr. Ignacy Wośko, Dr. Józef Kozak, Dr. Jerzy<br />

Purski, Dr. Józef Skrzypczak, Dr. Emil<br />

Zatoński, Dr. Stanisław Król, Dr. Tomasz<br />

Karski, Dr. Edward Warda, Dr. Władysław<br />

Lipiński (a soldier).<br />

In the beginnings of orthopaedic activities<br />

in Lublin the surgeons themselves performed<br />

anaesthesia (3 years T. Karski and<br />

E. Warda). The first anaesthetist in Lublin<br />

In 1913 in Poznań was grounded first in Poland „Orthopaedics Ward” under the name Gąsiorowski. In<br />

1921 was grounded in Poznań University Orthopaedic Department. The head of the Department was<br />

Prof. Irenausz Wierzejewski (1a) – called „Father of Polish Orthopaedics”. The successor was Prof. F.<br />

Raszeja (1b) [dead during 2 nd War in Getto in Warsaw], The next successor was Prof. Wiktor Dega<br />

(1c). In 1954 two Professor Dega’s Assistants were designed to Lublin.<br />

was Dr Wojciechowski (a soldier). He was<br />

able to perform <strong>pro</strong>fessional anaesthesia in<br />

the years 1954–1964, which enabled longer<br />

and more precise operations.<br />

In the years 1954 till 2001 the Children<br />

Orthopaedic Department was situated in<br />

Lublin, Staszica Street 11 (the distance<br />

between these both Departments was<br />

3 km).<br />

In 1970 the Children Department<br />

was acknowledged as a separate Children<br />

University Department in the Paediatric<br />

Institute of Medical University. The chief of<br />

this Department has been Prof. I. Wośko till<br />

1995. In the time 1995–2009 the chief of<br />

this Department was Prof. T. Karski, that’s<br />

means till the retirement.<br />

In 2001 the Children Orthopaedic<br />

Department (but only in 50 % of beds) was<br />

moved from Staszica Street 11 to a new<br />

Hospital (DSK) in Chodzki Street 2. The<br />

whole Department moved to DSK in 2007.<br />
