made but clandestinely, or only with a view to partake of the<br />

charity ; nor any assisting at such irregular makings, shall<br />

be ever qualified to partake of the Masons general charity.<br />

ART. 24. That the B<strong>ro</strong>thers attesting a petition for<br />

charity, shall be able to certify that the petitioner has been<br />

formerly in reputable, at least, in tolerable circumstances.<br />

ART. 25. That every petition received, shall be signed or<br />

certified by the majority of the Lodge, to which the peti<br />

tioner does, or did belong.<br />

ART. 26. That the name and calling of the petitioner<br />

expressly mentioned.<br />

ART. 27. At the Grand Lodge, on April 6, 1736, Wey­<br />

mouth being Grand Master, and, in his absence, Deputy-<br />

Grand Master Ward, in the chair; upon the motion of the<br />

Committee of Charity, it was resolved, That no petition of<br />

charity shall be received, which has not been offered first to<br />

the Secretary, and laid in his hands ten days, at least, before<br />

the meeting of the Committee of Charity, that he may have<br />

time to be informed of its allegations, if they are dubious.<br />

ART. 28. At the Grand Lodge, on March 20, 1739,<br />

Raymond Grand Master, it was resolved, That a B<strong>ro</strong>ther's<br />

being entitled to, and receiving relief out of, the charity of a<br />

particular Lodge, in pursuance of the laws thereof, shall be<br />

no objection to his being relieved out of the general charity,<br />

in case such Lodge shall contribute to said general charity,<br />

according to the laws of the society.<br />

ART. 29. At the Grand Lodge, on December 3, 1741<br />

Morton Grand Master, it was resolved, That before the<br />

Brethren p<strong>ro</strong>ceed to business in any Committee of Charity,<br />

all the laws relating to the disposal of the General Charity<br />

of this Society be first read; and that for the future no<br />

petition shall be received, unless every B<strong>ro</strong>ther shall, at the
