Thus the Committee of Charity has been established<br />

among the Free and Accepted Masons of England, who<br />

have very gene<strong>ro</strong>usly contributed to their General Fund, and<br />

do still persevere in the good work.<br />

ART. 34. The Committee regularly meets, according to<br />

summons of the Grand Master, or his Deputy, and has re­<br />

lieved many distressed B<strong>ro</strong>thers with small sums, not exceed­<br />

ing five Pounds to each. But the Grand Lodge has ordered<br />

the Treasurer to pay to some petitioners, ten, or fifteen, or<br />

twenty Pounds, as they thought the case required. So that<br />

the distressed have found far greater relief f<strong>ro</strong>m this General<br />

Charity than can be expected f<strong>ro</strong>m particular Lodges ; and<br />

the contributions being paid by the Lodges in parcels, at<br />

various times, have not been burdensome.<br />

ART. 35. The Treasurer's accounts have been audited<br />

and balanced at every Grand Lodge ; whereby all know the<br />

stock in hand, and how every parcel of the Charity has been<br />

disposed of; every thing being duly recorded in the Grand<br />

Lodge Book, and in that of the Committee, of which every<br />

Master of a contributing Lodge is a Member.<br />

OF THE STEWARDS.<br />

The first mention made of Stewards, is in the Old Regula­<br />

tions, 33, concerning the Annual Feast, where it is ordained,<br />

That in order to relieve the two Grand Wardens in the ex­<br />

traordinary t<strong>ro</strong>uble of that General Assembly, and that all<br />

matters might be expeditiously and safely managed, the Grand<br />

Master or his Deputy, shall have power to nominate and ap­<br />

point a certain number of Stewards, as his Worship shall think<br />

fit, to act in concert with the two Grand Wardens; and that<br />

all things, relating to the Feast should be decided among<br />

them by a majority of votes ; except the Grand Master, or
