on Education, appointed by the Grand Royal Arch Chapter
of this State, submitted the following report, which was ac
cepted, and the recommendations concurred in.
REPORT:
The Committee appointed by this Most Worshipful Grand Lodge, to confer
with a Committee from the Grand Chapter on the subject of Education, beg
leave to report, that they held each conference during the Session of the
Oread Chapter. The subject of Education is one which more deeply interests
the Masonic Fraternity, and which requires of this Grand L< dgo more de
voted care and energetic action, than |>< rim;* any subject that will be brought
before tbis Grand Body at its present Communication. It is a theme which
needs no argument from your Committee to give it weight and consequence
before this Body; it is one that has employed the most able and benevolent
minds, in all portions of the Masonic World, for ages past, and the mere
pointing of the finger to the destitution, misery and crime which surrounds
us, will plead with far grea er power, and more touching eloquence, than
any thing your Committee could say in a report.
Your Committee have carefully examined and considered the plans adopted
by our sister Grand Lodges for forwarding this great cause, and whilst
awarding them all praise for their exertions, we are satisfied, that it is not
prudent at tbis time, for this Grand Lodge to undertake to build and foster
•• iastitutbin if learning under their peculiar care and sure, intendence; but,
of the country.
Tear Committee, therefore, beg leave to recommend, that the Lodges sub
ordinate to this Grand Lodge, be requested to enter firmly, surely and
energetically in tbe good work, and not to cease their exertions, whilst there is
a single descendant of any destitute Mason, within their jurisdiction, who
has not had tbe benefit of a good common school education, and who is not
competent to fill, with credit to himself, any situation of honor or profit,
which his own merits, or the favor of his fellow citizens may confer upon
him.
