near-field of the part c<strong>on</strong>taining the ILW <strong>and</strong> LLW <strong>and</strong> the near-field of the part<br />

c<strong>on</strong>taining the HLW <strong>and</strong> spent fuel. An important questi<strong>on</strong> for site selecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

GDF design is how this can be achieved in various geological envir<strong>on</strong>ments. A<br />

key questi<strong>on</strong> is whether it is possible <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> dem<strong>on</strong>strate that there will be sufficiently<br />

limited interacti<strong>on</strong> between the two near-fields over sufficiently l<strong>on</strong>g time periods<br />

for a post-closure safety case <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be developed. There are a number of <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>pics <strong>on</strong><br />

which R&D is required in order <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> address these questi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> hence inform a<br />

decisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> whether <strong>on</strong>e co-located GDF or two (or more) separate GDFs will be<br />

the most appropriate opti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

A.78 ILW disposal c<strong>on</strong>cepts c<strong>on</strong>sidered <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> date in the UK involve the use of large<br />

volumes of cement-based materials in the waste packages, the backfill <strong>and</strong> in<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of a GDF. Several c<strong>on</strong>cepts for the disposal of HLW <strong>and</strong> spent fuel<br />

involve the use of ben<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>nite backfill. The cement-based materials will cause<br />

groundwaters that come in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tact with them <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> become highly alkaline. The<br />

potential interacti<strong>on</strong>s between these high pH groundwaters <strong>and</strong> ben<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>nite require<br />

further research, as do the interacti<strong>on</strong>s between high pH groundwaters <strong>and</strong><br />

vitrified HLW.<br />

A.79 At a major workshop <strong>on</strong> ben<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>nite-cement interacti<strong>on</strong> (NUMO, 2004) it was<br />

emphasised that significantly more <strong>and</strong> new experiments, <strong>and</strong> new coupled<br />

chemical diffusi<strong>on</strong>–advecti<strong>on</strong> models, are required <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> predict<br />

ben<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>nite behaviour, including swelling <strong>and</strong> evoluti<strong>on</strong> of high gas pressures,<br />

dissoluti<strong>on</strong>, cementing <strong>and</strong> porosity reducti<strong>on</strong> by precipitati<strong>on</strong> of silica, cati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

ani<strong>on</strong> affinities under high pH, <strong>and</strong> overall barrier system performance. Most<br />

workers c<strong>on</strong>sidered that low pH alternatives <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ordinary Portl<strong>and</strong> Cement (OPC)<br />

<strong>and</strong> composite cement systems need development, <strong>and</strong> that systems with lower<br />

cement/ben<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>nite ratios were less likely <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be problematic than those in which the<br />

cement/ben<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>nite ratio is high or the groundwater chemistry in a GDF<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ment dominated by cement interacti<strong>on</strong> (NUMO, 2004).<br />

A.80 The NUMO 2004 executive summary <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s, which c<strong>on</strong>stitutes their<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sidered set of suggesti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> recommendati<strong>on</strong>s for future acti<strong>on</strong>, is<br />

extracted below <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> illustrate the recognised issues:<br />

• Additi<strong>on</strong>al experiments <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> verify present underst<strong>and</strong>ing should be<br />

undertaken.<br />

• Additi<strong>on</strong>al informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the l<strong>on</strong>g-term evoluti<strong>on</strong> of cement-barrier systems<br />

would be desirable.<br />

• C<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> should be given <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<strong>on</strong>g-term experiments.<br />

• Analogues could yield useful informati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

• There are underground labora<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry facilities, such as the Mol URL in Belgium,<br />

which have been operating for 20 <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> 30 years <strong>and</strong> could be used <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> give<br />

useful informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> these time-scales.<br />

• It is desirable for new materials <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be c<strong>on</strong>sidered in place of cement <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

questi<strong>on</strong> ‘c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al wisdom’ which states that cement is the best material<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> use for c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> barrier functi<strong>on</strong>s in many circumstances.<br />

• It is desirable <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> develop low pH cements (pH ≤ 11, but not so low as <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

promote excessively rapid corrosi<strong>on</strong> of steel materials) with particular<br />
