Box 6. Examples of Topics <strong>on</strong> which Underground R&D is needed for GDF<br />

Design <strong>and</strong> Safety Case Development<br />

• The resp<strong>on</strong>ses of the rock mass <strong>and</strong> existing underground openings <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

excavati<strong>on</strong>, this could include:<br />

• excavati<strong>on</strong> techniques <strong>and</strong> excavati<strong>on</strong> support techniques for the l<strong>on</strong>g term<br />

• deep drilling techniques<br />

• research in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the resp<strong>on</strong>se of rock masses <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> excavati<strong>on</strong> technique, <strong>and</strong><br />

opening size <strong>and</strong> orientati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

• the development of EDZs<br />

• the possible effect of excavati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> existing underground openings in given<br />

in situ stress c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> the influence of excavati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> stress fields.<br />

• Engineered barrier performance:<br />

• full scale barrier tests<br />

• c<strong>on</strong>tainer tests<br />

• buffer <strong>and</strong> overpack tests<br />

• tunnel <strong>and</strong> shaft seals <strong>and</strong> ultimately facility seals<br />

• borehole sealing<br />

• Radi<strong>on</strong>uclide movement through the geosphere:<br />

• solute advecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> diffusi<strong>on</strong><br />

• colloidal transport<br />

• radi<strong>on</strong>uclide sorpti<strong>on</strong><br />

• gas threshold pressure relati<strong>on</strong>ships<br />

• Waste h<strong>and</strong>ling under realistic c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

• effects of heat <strong>and</strong> radiati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the host rock<br />

• heat effect <strong>on</strong> structures<br />

• thermal-hydraulic-chemical-mechanical testing<br />

• The l<strong>on</strong>g-term performance of the GDF <strong>and</strong> the efficacy of the EBS under<br />

realistic c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

• dem<strong>on</strong>strati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> testing of disposal c<strong>on</strong>cept<br />

• materials interfaces, for example surrounding the co-locati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cept<br />

• backfill behaviour <strong>and</strong> efficacy<br />

• corrosi<strong>on</strong> of waste c<strong>on</strong>tainers<br />

• degradati<strong>on</strong> of waste forms<br />

• l<strong>on</strong>g-term performance of multiple underground openings.<br />

5.39 The RWMD R&D Strategy explains how its R&D will evolve during the MRWS<br />

process (NDA, <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>b). It states that during Stage 5 (surface-based<br />

investigati<strong>on</strong>s) its R&D will focus <strong>on</strong> the site-specific processes that will<br />

determine the performance of engineered barriers or c<strong>on</strong>trol the movement of<br />

fluids <strong>and</strong> radi<strong>on</strong>uclides. For Stage 6 it states that:<br />

“A key aspect of this phase will be underground investigati<strong>on</strong>s. There will be<br />

some site-specific informati<strong>on</strong> at a large spatial scale, which can <strong>on</strong>ly be<br />

obtained by investigati<strong>on</strong> underground in the specific geology <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sidered for hosting the facility. We will carry out these investigati<strong>on</strong>s as<br />

part of the c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of the facility <strong>and</strong> therefore our planning does not<br />

include a separate phase for R&D in an underground research labora<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry.”<br />
