First Time
Purpose
To develop first time shooting on goal
Organization
Set out a 20-by-20-yard area with a goal (5 yards wide) and a goalkeeper on one endline. Station 1 server on each
side of the goal, each with a supply of balls, 2 retrieving players behind the goal, and an attacking player on the far
side of the area from the goal. Repeat in one other area for a total of 12 players.
Game Objective
The first server plays the ball into the space in front of the attacking player. The attacking player runs on to the
ball and attempts a first-time shot on goal. As soon as the attacking player makes contact with the ball, the second
server plays a ball into the space in front of goal. The attacking player runs on to the second ball and attempts a
first-time shot on goal. The attacking player sprints back to the start line to repeat the activity. Rotate positions.
Progressions
1. Use the weaker foot when shooting.
2. Introduce bouncing balls and volleys.
3. The server follows the ball into the area to create defensive resistance.
Key Coaching Points
1. Place your non-kicking foot alongside the ball.
2. Get your knee over the ball at impact.
3. Follow through at the intended target.
4. Strike the ball with the inside of your foot for accuracy when closer to goal.
