Turns and Burns<br />
Purpose<br />
To develop turns to change direction under pressure from a defender<br />
Organization<br />
Set out a 20-by-20-yard area. Use discs to create three 10-by-10-yard areas in the shape <strong>of</strong> a triangle inside the<br />
larger area. Station 4 players inside each 10-by-10-yard area, each with a ball.<br />
Game Objective<br />
Each 10-by-10-yard area is assigned a turn. Players dribble around the area and on the coach’s command they<br />
perform the assigned turn. On the coach’s command, “Change,” players leave their balls and run into the next 10-<br />
by-10-yard area. Players dribble around the area with a new ball and on the coach’s command they perform the<br />
assigned turn for that area. Repeat. Turns may include the Cruyff turn, sole turn, step over move, Maradonna turn,<br />
and any other turns that players know or create.<br />
Progressions<br />
1. Use the weaker foot only.<br />
2. Introduce a defender into each 10-by-10-yard area.<br />
Key Coaching Points<br />
1. Focus on completing the turn with good technique.<br />
2. Accelerate out <strong>of</strong> the turn to full speed within five paces.<br />
3. Keep the ball close between touches.<br />
