3 vs. 1 vs. 1
Purpose
To develop combination play in a game situation
Organization
Set out a 30-by-40-yard area. Station a goal (5 yards wide) and a goalkeeper on one endline. Station 3 attacking
players with one ball on the far endline from the goal. Use discs to create two 10–by-30-yard channels on the far
side of the area from the goal. Station the first defender in the channel in front of the 3 attackers and 1 defender in
the channel behind the first defender. Allow 20 yards from the last defender’s area to the goal. Repeat in three other
areas for a total of 12 players.
Game Objective
The 3 attacking players combine to pass the ball side to side to advance the ball down the field. Defensive players
may attempt to tackle the 3 attacking players when they enter their 10-by-30-yard channel. Defensive players may
not leave their area. Once the 3 attacking players have passed through both channels, they combine to get a shot on
goal and score. Repeat and then rotate positions.
Progressions
1. Add channels.
2. Increase the number of defenders in each channel.
3. Add a covering defender to the area in front of goal.
Key Coaching Points
1. Draw the defender toward you before passing the ball to a teammate.
2. Don’t hold on to the ball too long to allow the defender to close down your passing angles and options.
3. Name the person to whom you are passing.
4. Call for the ball and tell the player with the ball where you want the ball to be played.
5. Play the ball into the space in front of players so that they can run onto the ball.
