Zigzag Shooting
Purpose
To develop close control in front of goal
Organization
Set out a 20-by-30-yard area with a goal (5 yards wide) and goalkeeper on one endline. Place a series of diagonal
discs on the far side of the area, and a disc on each side of the area, 5 yards in from the sideline and 15 yards from
the goal line. Position 2 attackers at the entrance to the diagonal discs, each with a ball, and a retrieving player behind
the goal. Repeat in two other areas for a total of 12 players.
Game Objective
The first player dribbles through the diagonal discs and around the sideline disc before shooting on goal. The goalkeeper
attempts to save the ball. The retrieving player collects the ball if a goal is scored or the shot is wide of the
goal. The second player dribbles through the diagonal discs and around the sideline disc before shooting on goal.
Repeat and then rotate positions.
Progressions
1. Use the weaker foot when dribbling and shooting.
2. Add a defender to the middle of the area.
3. The second player chases the first player through the diagonal discs and around the sideline disc.
Key Coaching Points
1. Keep the ball within 2–3 feet between touches.
2. Use the inside of both feet to change direction around the cones.
3. Look up between touches.
4. Focus on accuracy before power when shooting on goal.
