6 vs. 6 Free Channels
Purpose
To develop accuracy in crossing
Organization
Set out a 60-by-40-yard area with goals (5 yards wide) and a goalkeeper on both endlines. Use discs to create 5-
yard sideline channels on both sides of the area. Play 5 vs. 5 inside the area. One ball per practice.
Game Objective
Teammates combine to maintain possession of the ball inside the area. The object is to dribble into the channel or
pass the ball to a teammate in the channel. Once in the channel, players have 10 seconds to dribble up field, unopposed
by a defender, and cross the ball into the area in front of goal. If a player does not play the ball back into the
area within 10 seconds, the opposition team is awarded a free kick.
Progressions
1. Allow a defender to enter the channel 5 yards behind where the ball crossed into the channel.
2. Shorten the unopposed time to 5 seconds.
Key Coaching Points
1. Attack the front post, middle, and far post areas in front of goal with speed.
2. Make diagonal and looped runs. Avoid straight runs into the area in front of goal.
3. Call for the ball. Tell the wide player where you want the ball to be played.
4. Strike the ball low and hard across the goal.
