Flicks and Kicks
Purpose
To develop free-kick options around goal
Organization
Set out a 20-by-20-yard area with a goal (5 yards wide) and a goalkeeper on one endline. Station 4 players in a line
15 yards from goal, each with a ball. Station an attacking player on the far endline from the goal. Repeat in one
other area for a total of 12 players.
Game Objective
Players stationed 15 yards from the goal line with a ball take it in turns to flick the ball up for the attacking player
to half volley or volley on goal. Repeat and then rotate positions.
Progressions
1. Use the weaker foot when shooting.
2. The player who flicks the ball turns and makes an arcing run into the space in front of goal. The attacking
player fakes a shot and lobs the ball into the space in front of goal for his teammate to volley or head on goal.
Key Coaching Points
1. Keep the head and the knee over the ball at impact.
2. Don’t lean back.
3. Keep your eye on the ball at all times.
4. Strike the ball with your laces.
5. Follow through at the target.
