6 vs. 6 Dribble and Shoot
Purpose
To develop tackling in a game situation
Organization
Set out a 50-by-40-yard area with a goal (5 yards wide) and a goalkeeper on both endlines. Play 5 vs. 5 inside the
area. One ball per practice.
Game Objective
Play a regular scrimmage game with two exceptions. First, players are assigned a marking player on the opposition
team. They are only allowed to tackle this player. A free kick is awarded if a player tackles an opposition player
other than their marking player. Secondly, players are not permitted to pass the ball during the game. Players are
only allowed to dribble with the ball or shoot on goal. A free kick is awarded if a player passes the ball to another
player at any time. These rule adaptations will increase the opportunity for players to tackle an opponent during
the game.
Progressions
1. Give each player 2 players that they may tackle during the game.
2. Give each player 1 player that they may pass to.
Key Coaching Points
1. Marking players should be touch-tight and goal side.
2. Get low to the ground and side on to the ball.
3. Establish contact with the attacking player with your leading arm.
4. Fake to tackle.
5. Once the attacking player has made his move, move in to win the ball.
6. Don’t go to ground. Stay on your feet and keep yourself in the play.
