Purpose
To develop combination play
Organization
Set out a 30-by-30-yard area with a goal (3 yards wide) on both endlines. Station 3 players on each endline with 1 ball.
Game Objective
Teammates combine to play the ball side to side to advance the ball down the field. A goal is scored when a player
passes the ball through the goal for a teammate to control the ball on the far side of the goal line. Teams work in
opposite directions simultaneously. As one team is moving down the area, the other team is moving up the area.
Repeat and then rotate positions.
Progressions
1. Encourage players to loop around each other creating overlapping runs on the flanks.
2. Introduce a third and fourth group of 3. As 2 teams move down the area, the other 2 teams move up the area.
3. Introduce defenders. Play 3 vs. 3 with 1 ball.
Key Coaching Points
1. Name the person to whom you are passing.
2. Call for the ball and tell the player with the ball where you want the ball to be played.
3. Play the ball into the space in front of players so that they can run on to the ball.
4. Look up to observe the movements of other players in the area.
