4 vs. 4 to 4 vs. 6
Purpose
To develop defending as a unit
Organization
Set out a 30-by-20-yard area. Station 4 defenders on an endline and two teams of 4 attackers on the far endline
One ball per practice.
Game Objective
The first 4 attackers advance towards the defensive goal line. The attackers must attempt to stop the ball on the
defensive goal line to score. Defensive players may move as soon as the ball is advanced into the area. Defenders
attempt to intercept the ball and stop the ball on either sideline to score. Players return to their starting positions
whenever a goal is scored or the ball goes out of bounds. The second 4 attackers advance towards the defensive goal
line and repeat the exercise. Repeat and then rotate positions.
Progressions
1. Increase the width of the area.
2. Play 6 attackers vs. 4 defenders with 2 recovering defenders.
Key Coaching Points
1. The first defender should close down the space to the ball as quickly as possible.
2. Other defenders should identify attacking players and mark them touch-tight and goal side.
3. Defenders should communicate instructions and help each other to organize throughout.
4. Defenders should apply double teams when an attacking player is penned into a side or corner of the area.
