Gambier area and adjacent parts of western<br />

Victoria. In these terms the laterite<br />

predated the Quater<strong>na</strong>ry, which appeared<br />

consistent with stratigraphically dated<br />

laterites in northern Australia. The stratigraphic<br />

relationship is correct, but the<br />

temporal placement of the chronology was<br />

drastically changed with the discovery<br />

that the basalt is Middle Jurassic, not<br />

Quater<strong>na</strong>ry, in age (WELLMAN, 1971).<br />

In these terms the laterite still predates<br />

the basalt, but is younger than the<br />

Permian glacigene rocks on which it is in<br />

places <strong>de</strong>veloped. Regio<strong>na</strong>l stratigraphic<br />

consi<strong>de</strong>rations suggest a Triassic age for<br />

the duricrust and the surface on which it<br />

<strong>de</strong>veloped (DAILY et al., 1974). Antiquity<br />

of this or<strong>de</strong>r is confirmed by oxygen isotope<br />

a<strong>na</strong>lysis of clays from the lateritic profiles<br />

(BIRD & CHIVAS, 1988, 1993).<br />

[When an attempt was ma<strong>de</strong> to<br />

publish this evi<strong>de</strong>nce, argument and conclusion<br />

(DAILY et al., 1974) it was rejected<br />

by the first jour<strong>na</strong>l to which the<br />

manuscript was submitted, one referee<br />

uncompromisingly stating that the conclusion<br />

was 'imp<strong>os</strong>sible'. However incredible<br />

it may have seemed at the time, the<br />

conclusion was surely worthy of an airing<br />

and eventually more liberal views prevailed.<br />

Unfortu<strong>na</strong>tely, institutio<strong>na</strong>l disbelief<br />

resulted in many official maps carrying<br />

legends which indicate laterites at least<br />

150 million years too young and based in<br />

a tectonically unlikely concept for another<br />

20 years or so.]<br />

The survival of land surfaces for some<br />

hundreds of millions of years was and still<br />

is regar<strong>de</strong>d by many as unreaso<strong>na</strong>ble or<br />

imp<strong>os</strong>sible (e.g. BOURMAN, 1989, p.<br />

47, 1995, p. 16, to take a recent example).<br />

The concept of constant and wi<strong>de</strong>spread<br />

change was, after all based in observations,<br />

reaso<strong>na</strong>ble perceptions and common sense:<br />

how could a landscape constantly subjected<br />

to the elements not be worn down?<br />

Ratio<strong>na</strong>l arguments were, however un<strong>de</strong>rmined<br />

by the <strong>de</strong>velopment of a different<br />

way of viewing processes and landscape,<br />

though these new i<strong>de</strong>as were not given<br />

serious consi<strong>de</strong>ration for many years. On<br />

the contrary, both Crickmay and his concept<br />

of unequal activity, were subjected to<br />

ridicule (TWIDALE, 1993).<br />

Quantification to the rescue<br />

The forces of Nature are commonly<br />

un<strong>de</strong>restimated. In geomorphology, the<br />

impacts of some events on the landscape<br />

were either not recognised or not believed<br />

because the investigators could not - or<br />

would not - accept the implied magnitu<strong>de</strong><br />

of the forces at work. The importance<br />

of floods in shaping the landscape was<br />

recognised early, but the p<strong>os</strong>sible magnitu<strong>de</strong><br />

of <strong>na</strong>tural floods was not. Quantified<br />

relationships were established between<br />

stream discharge and velocity on the one<br />

hand, and such features as channel width,<br />

mean<strong>de</strong>r geometry and <strong>de</strong>p<strong>os</strong>itio<strong>na</strong>l features<br />

such as bars and ripples, on the other<br />

(e.g. TRICART, 1961; LEOPOLD et al.,<br />

1964; MALDE, 1968). Only then did the<br />

origin and significance of certain <strong>na</strong>turally-occurring<br />

riverine forms become<br />

comprehensible. The impacts of very large<br />

if localised floods, either <strong>na</strong>tural (e.g.<br />

BAKER et al., 1988; GARCIA RUIZ et<br />

al., 1996) or associated with burst dams<br />

(e.g. TRICART, 1960; KIERSCH, 1964)<br />

reinforced these conclusions.
