A B S T R A C T<br />

The present paper <strong>de</strong>scribes the <strong>de</strong>sign, construction, calibration and operation of a<br />

spray rainfall simulator . The <strong>de</strong>sign of the plots used for the purp<strong>os</strong>e of this study is also<br />

<strong>de</strong>scribed in or<strong>de</strong>r to <strong>de</strong>termine hydrological and er<strong>os</strong>ion parameters.<br />

Selected rainfall intensity of 64 mm h - 1 are representative of heavy storm conditions in<br />

Galicia. Drop size distribution results in these conditions , a D 5 0 of 1.2 mm, were similar<br />

to th<strong>os</strong>e calculated for <strong>na</strong>tural rainfall by BUBENZER (1979). Fall velocities reached<br />

were between 75 and 100% termi<strong>na</strong>l velocity, <strong>de</strong>pending on drop diameter and 13.05 J<br />

m - 2 m m - 1 kinetic energy was obtained.<br />

Surface area of the plots used was 1 m 2 , surron<strong>de</strong>d by a metal structure connected to a<br />

V-shaped system to collect the surface runoff and sediment produced in the diff e r e n t<br />

e x p e r i m e n t s .<br />
