shows the further strengthening of masticatory<br />

structures, which were necessary for<br />

more effective fragmentation of plant<br />

food. This contributed to the successful<br />

competition of U. spelaeus with other<br />

omnivorous large mammals of the Late<br />

Pleistocene and species penetration far to<br />

north, up to the Northern Ural<br />

(Medvezhiya Cave at 620 N; see Kuzmi<strong>na</strong><br />

1971).<br />
