son with U. rossicus and U. deningeri, it
shows the further strengthening of masticatory
structures, which were necessary for
more effective fragmentation of plant
food. This contributed to the successful
competition of U. spelaeus with other
omnivorous large mammals of the Late
Pleistocene and species penetration far to
north, up to the Northern Ural
(Medvezhiya Cave at 620 N; see Kuzmina
1971).
