FOREWORDThis 28th edition of the Yearbook of Copper and Other Mineral Statistics (1989-2008) reflects the ongoingcommitment of the Chilean Copper Commission to providing timely, reliable, relevant facts and figures on the Chileanmining scene. This year, in an effort to contribute to sector decision-making that is consistent with sustainableChilean development, new indicators have been added and publication has been moved up by one month.New this year are indicators on strategic mining inputs and supplies. These include fuel and electrical energyconsumption; apparent consumption, production, imports and exports of sulfuric acid, and mining equipment andsupplies. Also new are copper industry competitiveness indicators such as average ore grades; workforce productivityby company; Codelco statistics for the past 20 years, and crucial environmental data such as greenhouse gasemissions in the copper mining industry, to name a few. These reports help give some perspective to the importance Chile ascribes to its mining industry, especially aftera year, such as 2008, of exceptionally high world prices for its key minerals, even as copper prices took a sharplast-quarter downturn. Indeed, stated in current prices, the industry’s share of Chilean GDP in 2008 stood at ahealthy 17.6 percent, with copper alone accounting for fully 15.5 percent.Worthy of particular note is new investment materialized in 2008. Taken together, FDI under the Foreign InvestmentStatute plus Codelco and Enami spending totaled US$4.38 billion, a hefty 127 percent increase over theyear before. In addition to thanking all who made the Yearbook possible, I take this opportunity to invite readers to leveragethis and other statistical and analytical materials available from our web site at www.cochilco.cl. These valuablepublications contain a wealth of information on Chile’s copper and mineral markets and industries.EDUARDO TITELMAN GORENExecutive Vice President (Act.)COCHILCO11
