CARACTERÍSTICAS GENERALES Pág, 23/ dad es desarrollada como sistema de vida tanto para la satisfacción de las necesidades ali -mentidas como para generar intercambio comercial a base de las pieles que se obtiene.En el año 1961, tal como se observa en el Cuadro N 0 3-CG, el Censo Nacional registró una población de 853 habitantes, de los cuales 261 estaban ubicadosen el área urbana y 592 en el área rural. No se consideró, sin embargo, la población flotanteque se desplaza pendularmente de Perú a Brasil y viceversa.En el año 1972, según el Censo de Población y Vivienda, la poblacióndel distrito de Purús se había incrementado en 400 pobladores, alcanzando los 1,253habitantes. Este incremento, en términos relativos, determina una tasa de crecimiento de3.5% promedio anual, significando un mayor promedio qu» el del país. 'Jn términos qbsoluto'5,sinembargo, dado lo extenso del área y la alta disponibilidad de recursos, un incremento err11 años de 400 habitantes resulta sumamente ba¡o por su mínimo impacto sobre la relaciónpoblación-recursos prevaleciente en la zona de estudio. Población Económicamente ActivaLa zona de estudio muestra una estructura de producción dedicada totalmente a las actividades de explotación forestal, de caza, pesca y agropecuaria^ respetando la ocupación el indicado orden. Su aislamiento geográfico convierte a la actividad comercialen estratégica, por ser la que proporciona los productos alimenticios que son deficitariosen la zona, así como la generadora del comercio de exportación regional e intemacional, mostrando un comportamiento especulativo en grado máximo.l ^ La tasa de población ocupada de seis años y más ascendió a 33.4% ,que corresponde a 419 habitantes registrados por el censo de población del año 1 972, segúnpuede observarse en el Cuadro N 0 4-CG.
