ENRIQUE
SALAVERRÍA
(1922-2012)
“He caminado casi toda la república a pie buscando barro y piedras.”
“I have walked almost all the republic looking for mud and stones.”
Escultura correspondiente a la serie del dolor.
Sculpture corresponding to the pain series.
The work of Enrique Salaverría has been one of the most experimental
in El Salvador; from the abstract to realism, from surrealism to cubism.
He has worked with clay, wood and stone carving, resin, iron and
bronze. “I search into materials for their expression,” said the artist.
His sculpture is, because of this weight of exploring languages,
techniques, and materials one of the most avant-garde.
He was educated as architect and later as sculptor at UNAM, Mexico.
He was also a student of Costa Rican sculptor Francisco Zuniga. In
2007, the Salvadorean government gave him the National Cultural
Award in Sculpture.
