MONUMENT TO THE FIRST ATTEMPT OF
INDEPENDENCE OF 1811, PLAZA LIBERTAD
It is the soul of San Salvador, and it can never fall.
During its restoration, in the late XX century, the monument is
anchored to the original masonry base with a metal frame, to
withstand the blows of nature.
During the period of Manuel Enrique Araujo, in 1911, the first
attempt of independence was commemorated, which occurred
in San Salvador one hundred years before. To commemorate
this event, the monument was constructed; it was designed and
erected by the Italian Francesco Durini, who created an allegorical
universe: an obelisk crowned by The Victory and supported by
The Republic. On the sides, scenes from the signature of the Act
of Independence in 1821 and the first Attempt of Independence
in 1811. Everything is guarded by the medallions of Jose Matias
Delgado and Juan Ramón Rodriguez; national heroes of the
Independence.
This monument allows us to put on a civil face to the heroes of
the country, which once were only military.
