“Un artista se debe al pueblo.”
La escultura cerámica de César Sermeño tiene una fuerte
vinculación con los elementos de nuestro pasado precolombino y la
reinterpretación estética de la realidad salvadoreña.
En su obra, aparecen en constante la mujer y las figuras animales
míticas de nuestra cultura, como jaguares, búhos y aves.
Se formó en El Salvador, Honduras y México. Fue en México “donde
definí mi visión estética del arte”, dice el artista. Fue invitado a
quedarse en México, pero declinó: “México ya era México, pero en
El Salvador había mucho por hacer, por eso volví”, recuerda. Su
aparición significó una ruptura de la concepción de la cerámica y
la cerámica escultórica en nuestro país. Los intelectuales Salarrué,
Hugo Lindo y Matilde Elena López, entre otros, elogiaron su obra.

The ceramic sculpture by Cesar Sermeño has a strong link with the
elements of our Pre-Columbian past and the aesthetic reinterpretation
of Salvadorean reality.
In his work, women and mythical animal figures of our culture; such
as jaguars, owls, and birds, are a constant.
He was formed in El Salvador, Honduras and Mexico. It was in Mexico
“where I defined my aesthetic vision of art,” says the artist. He was
invited to stay in Mexico, but he declined: “Mexico was Mexico, but
in El Salvador there was much to do, so I came back,” he recalls. His
appearance meant a break in the conception of pottery and ceramic
sculpture in our country. Intellectuals such as Salarrué, Hugo Lindo,
and Matilde Elena López, among others, praised his work.
Recibió el Premio Nacional de Cultura en Artes Plásticas en 1994.
He received the National Culture Award in Fine Arts in 1994.
