Medical report 123
(urine). The combination of the two gives a
biological profile that is unique to each player.
In the weeks leading up to the World Cup, FIFA
doping control officers paid an unannounced
visit to each of the 32 participating teams
to conduct out-of-competition doping tests
(blood and urine) on the players. All 736
players participating in the competition were
tested. All pre-competition doping analyses
conducted yielded negative results.
In-competition doping control
Following the routine in-competition
procedure as described in the FIFA Anti-
Doping Regulations, two players per team
were randomly selected for doping control
after each of the 64 matches to provide
urine and blood samples. Altogether, 512
samples were collected and analysed at the
WADA-accredited laboratory in Lausanne,
Switzerland. All samples returned negative
results.
Legacy for Brazil
Prior to both competitions – the FIFA
Confederations Cup 2013 and the 2014
FIFA World Cup Brazil – Football Emergency
Medicine Workshops were conducted with
the LOC Venue Medical Officers as well as the
team doctors of the participating member
associations. Furthermore, the field-of-play
medical teams at each venue were extensively
trained by Prof. Efraim Kramer. A new
benchmark for standard medical care on and
around the pitch has now been set.
The FIFA 11 for Health programme was
implemented in all 12 venues with 3,300
children. In collaboration with the CBF and
the Brazilian government, the programme will
later be implemented nationwide.
