System installation
After the final confirmation of the GLT
provider in October 2013, work began on
installing the system in the 12 FIFA World
Cup stadiums in Brazil, with cameras set
up under the roof of each stadium and then
connected to the hardware and software
in the control room. Finally, the system was
calibrated to ensure that it was in line with
the different conditions in each stadium.
GoalControl successfully completed the
installation in the last two stadiums in mid-
May, working in close cooperation with the
LOC and the local stadium management.
Final installation tests
The 12 installed systems then passed The
IFAB’s installation test, as part of which
more than 2,400 GLT incidents had to be
correctly indicated in various situations and
conditions. These tests were conducted by an
independent test institute, Labosport UK. FIFA
certified all 12 stadiums for 12 months on
the back of the positive test results.
Referee training
On 7 June, FIFA held a referee training
session at the Maracanã to ensure that all
match officials were comfortable with the
technology and to explain the pre-match
procedure in more detail. The general
functionality and accuracy of the system, and
the mandatory referee check in particular,
were important parts of this training session.
Media event
On 9 June, members of the media from all
around the world had an opportunity to see
the GoalControl-4D technology in action at
the Maracanã.
Following a short presentation on the
reasons behind the use of goal-line
technology and its functionality, the media
representatives were able to wear the
referees’ watch, which receives an indication
of “GOAL” within one second of the ball
crossing the line.
