Match 10: France v. Honduras
The tournament phase
GLT was a resounding success at the
tournament as it greatly assisted the match
officials, particularly in three decisive
situations. In the first incident, during
the group-stage match between France
and Honduras, even TV images were not
conclusive in showing whether it was a goal
or not. In the second incident, which occurred
during the Italy v. Costa Rica match, the match
officials’ view of where the ball had bounced
was blocked by the Italian goalkeeper, who
was lying on the ground, and they were
therefore reliant upon the new technology.
The third incident was in the Netherlands
v. Argentina semi-final, and once again the
system indicated to the Turkish referee that no
goal had been scored after the ball span back
towards the goal after a penalty had been
saved. In seven further incidents, the system
confirmed the referees’ decisions by means of
special GLT replays on TV (see table below).

All 171 goals (including penalties) were
recorded by the system and displayed correctly
on the referees’ watches. Consequently, the
referees were very happy with the system’s
performance and with the assistance it
provided during matches.
