The Ottawa WindEnsembleFormed in 2005, The Ottawa WindEnsemble (OWE) draws together currentand former Canadian Forces musicians,music teachers, and other professionalmusicians, in a professional-calibre group.Under the direction of foundingcon<strong>du</strong>ctor, Mark Rocheleau, this 35-member ensemble performs the symphonic wind ensemble repertoiremade famous by the Eastman Wind Ensemble, the rich concert bandrepertoire from North America and Europe, and the orchestraltranscriptions of famous composers. While the OWE is technically acommunity band, most of the members are fully involved in a life ofmusic as freelance musicians, music e<strong>du</strong>cators or full-time professionals.Mark Rocheleau began his formal studies in 1979 at the University ofWindsor, majoring on clarinet, and gra<strong>du</strong>ating with Bachelors of <strong>Music</strong>and E<strong>du</strong>cation. In October of 2005, Mark had completed 20 years ofservice with the Canadian Forces and elected to retire. His project sincethen has been to develop the OWE.Eric PaetkauEric Paetkau is music director and founder of theGroup of Twenty-Seven Chamber Orchestra, Toronto’sonly full chamber orchestra, and was recently appointedcon<strong>du</strong>ctor in residence of Les Violons <strong>du</strong> Roy. He hasalso held the position of assistant con<strong>du</strong>ctor oforchestral studies and opera at the University ofKentucky, as well as cover con<strong>du</strong>ctor for the LexingtonPhilharmonic. He also served as con<strong>du</strong>ctor of theLexington Chamber Orchestra and the Toronto-based MooredaleConcerto Players. Also a violist, Eric Paetkau was a member of theNuremburg Symphony in Germany, and has played with the TorontoSymphony, Les Violons <strong>du</strong> Roy, the Canadian Opera Company, theNational Ballet, and Tafelmusik. He studied with James Dunham at theNew England Conservatory and with Hariolf Schlichtig at theHochschule für Musik, Munich, Germany. Eric Paetkau also studiedcon<strong>du</strong>cting under Jac van Steen in the Netherlands and Kenneth Kieslerin North America.Véronique ParadisVéronique Paradis has always been very interested in theoverall health of the body, mind, and soul. She movedfrom Campbellton, NB, to Ottawa, ON, to studypsychology. For the past six years, yoga has been hergreatest support in life, allowing her to step out of herhead and on to her mat. Focusing on the breath enablesher to recognize her habitual patterns, such as holdingstress in the body and the mind. Véronique Paradis hascompleted 200 hours of Yoga Teacher Training (2008) and Yin Yoga(2009). She continues to learn through her personal practice and iscurrently studying anatomy and physiology at the University of Ottawa.Véronique Paradis strongly believes yoga is for everyone. In her classes,she reminds you to let go of your thoughts, ideas, and concerns. Anita PariThirteen-year-old Anita Pari has charmed audienceswith her beautiful interpretations of the pianorepertoire. In 2009, she placed first at the Canadian<strong>Music</strong> Competition. In 2010, she completed thePerformers’ Diploma of the Royal Conservatory of<strong>Music</strong>, receiving a gold medal for maintaining thehighest average mark in theory exams. This year, sheplaced third at the Virginia Waring International PianoCompetition where she performed Shostakovich’s F Major Concertowith orchestra. Most recently she participated in the Young ArtistProgram of the National Arts Centre as the only young pianist selectedin the pre-college program. Anita studies piano with Andrew Tunis ofthe University of Ottawa. She also studies cello with Anne Contant ofthe Conservatoire de musique de Gatineau and composes, havingdistinguished herself in both disciplines at the national level. Her“Nocturne for Strings” was performed last year by the Cecilia StringQuartet.Steven PhilcoxPianist Steven Philcox has performed with many of ourmost renowned singers, including Richard Margison,Jean Stillwell, and Isabel Bayrakdarian. Recitalappearances have taken him to many of NorthAmerica’s greatest concert halls, including his 1998debut at Carnegie Hall (Weill Hall) in association withthe American Society for Contemporary Opera andSong. Further recital appearances have included LosAngeles and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, New York. His debutrecording with Canadian soprano Martha Guth features the works ofDebussy, Crumb, and Messaien.
