All Saints’All Saints’ parish in Sandy Hill was established in 1898 and the churchbuilt from 1898 to 1900. Sir Henry Newell Bate, owner of a wholesalegrocery business and first chairman of the Ottawa ImprovementCommission, was the founder and principal benefactor of the church.The neo-Gothic limestone building, reminiscent of rural churches inmedieval southwest England, was designed by Ottawa architect AlfredM. Calderon.One of the prized stained glass windows is dedicated to the memoryof Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden, a long-time parishioner. Thebell tower’s nine-bell chime, unique in Ottawa and rare in Canada, isstill rung every Sunday. The bells were cast by London’s Mears andStainbank, creators of Big Ben. All Saints’ music tradition includesorganist-choirmasters Edgar Birch (1904-1910) and John W. Bearder(1913-1931) who made major contributions to music in Ottawa. AllSaints’ shares its space with many community and non-profit groups,including the Ottawa Mandarin Church Alliance and music arts anddance groups.Située dans la Côte de Sable, cette église fut fondée en 1898 et saconstruction achevée au début de 1900. Thecornerstone of the current building, originally constructed asChalmers Presbyterian Church, was laid in 1912. Montreal architectAlex C. Hutchinson’s design was said to reflect the Romanesquearchitecture of southern France. The sanctuary’s ceiling line ishighlighted by capped columns, stained glass windows and grandarches that provide a vaulted effect to the central hexagonal roofdome. Recent renovations have updated the building while respectingits historic significance and classic design. The magnificent 5,157-pipeCasavant organ, installed in the Byzantine sanctuary in 1965, is oftenheard on CBC broadcasts. While looking forward to a promisingfuture, the congregation takes pride in the church’s history, honouringthe generations that worshipped and worked together in a spirit ofcaring and sharing.Église Unie Dominion ChalmersDatant du début du 19e siècle, cette église est située au cœur de ce quiétait alors l’agglomération de Bytown. La pierre angulaire du lieu, quis’appelait alors Église presbytérienne Chalmers, fut posée en 1912. Lesplans de l’architecte montréalais Alex C. Hutchinson s’inspiraient del’architecture romane du Sud de la France. Les piliers à chapiteaux,vitraux et arcades créent un dôme hexagonal qui met en évidence leplafond du sanctuaire. Les dernières rénovations ont su respecterl’importance historique de l’édifice ainsi que son architectureclassique. Le magnifique orgue Casavant de 5,157 tuyaux, installé en1965 fait fréquemment la joie des auditeurs de la CBC. La paroisse estfière de son église et des générations de paroissiens qui y ont travaillédans un esprit de partage et de compassion.Glebe Community CentreThe Glebe Community Centre, formerly St. James United Church, islocated in the heart of Ottawa’s Glebe. Construction of the churchbegan in 1913 but due to problems resulting from World War I, thebuilding was not completed until 1924. The term glebe refers to alarge tract of land deeded by the Crown as a trust for the clergy ofthe Church. The Community Centre has been actively serving thecommunity since 1974, offering recreational and cultural events, aswell as a variety of educational activities and a venue for communitymeetings. The impressive domed Eileen Scotton Hall is noted for itsacoustics and appreciated by musicians and music lovers alike. TheGlebe Community Centre has been designated as a HeritageBuilding by the Ontario Heritage Act and recently re-opened after afull renovation.Centre communautaire GlebeLe Centre communautaire Glebe, qui logeait autrefois l’église unie St.James, est situé au cœur du quartier Glebe d’Ottawa.
