Toronto Masque TheatreThe Renaissance origins of the masque were probablyin masked processions visiting noble houses. Later, itdeveloped into a more elaborate performance with ascripted plot, often about mythological or allegoricalsubjects, of the sort we see in Shakespeare’s The Tempestor read about in Cervantes’ Don Quixote. The appeal ofthe masque goes well beyond its aristocratic origins andits historical interest. It’s accessible to all who appreciateinnovative, interdisciplinary collaborations. This unique combination ofmultiple artistic media is fertile ground for artists and audiences seekingfriendly collaboration and dedicated professionalism. The TorontoMasque Theatre is a company of emerging and established artists frommany disciplines and backgrounds, whose sense of shared communityreaches out to include their audience in the excitement of creation andperformance. We are rooted in the traditions of the masque and webring those traditions to life in fresh, new ways for contemporaryaudiences.Bramwell ToveyBramwell Tovey’s career as a conductor is uniquelyenhanced by his work as a composer and pianist, lendinghim a remarkable musical perspective. Prior to his musicdirectorship in Vancouver, Bramwell Tovey spent twelveyears as music director of the Winnipeg SymphonyOrchestra, where he founded its highly regarded NewMusic Festival. With a profound commitment to newmusic, Bramwell Tovey has established himself as aformidable composer and is the first artist to win a Juno Award in bothconducting and composing. Bramwell Tovey has also built a strongreputation as an accomplished jazz pianist with two recordings to hisname and has made memorable appearances on television. Awardednumerous honorary degrees, Bramwell Tovey has received a Fellowshipfrom the Royal Academy of Music in London, honorary Doctorates ofLaw from the University of Winnipeg, the University of Manitoba andKwantlen University College, as well as a Fellowship from the RoyalConservatory of Music in Toronto.Andrew TunisAndrew Tunis has been living and performing in theOttawa area for over 20 years. He has given concerts inNorth America, Europe, the Caribbean, the Middle Eastand Asia. Among the many musicians with whom hehas collaborated are violinists Pinchas Zukerman andMartin Beaver, cellists Desmond Hoebig and StevenIsserlis, as well as the Philharmonia Quartet of Berlinand St. Lawrence String Quartet. He has appeared asguest soloist with many Canadian orchestras, including the National ArtsCentre Orchestra, Calgary Philharmonic and Ottawa and Edmontonsymphony orchestras. After studies at the University of Ottawa, he wenton to study at the Manhattan School of Music where he received thePablo Casals Award for outstanding musical achievement. He won firstprize in several national and international competitions and, with cellistDesmond Hoebig, first prize at the 1984 Munich InternationalCompetition. Il a collaboré avecles violonistes Pinchas Zukerman et Martin Beaver, lesvioloncellistes Desmond Hoebig et Steven Isserlis ainsiqu’avec le quatuor Philharmonia de Berlin et le quatuorà cordes St. Lawrence. Il a été soliste invité avec l’Orchestredu Centre national des Arts, l’Orchestre de Radio-Canada deVancouver, le Philharmonique de Calgary et les orchestres symphoniquesd’Ottawa et d’Edmonton. Il a aussi été lauréat de plusieursconcours nationaux et internationaux et a reçu le prix Pablo Casals pourson travail musical exemplaire lors de son passage à la Manhattan Schoolof Music. Il a aussi remporté le premier prix, accompagné du violoncellisteDesmond Hoebig, au Concours international de Munich en1984.
