agenda culturel • 19Henri Manguin,magicien de la couleurCet été, le musée Bonnard, sur les hauteurs du Cannet, invite sur sescimaises un ami du maître des lieux. Celui qui lui fit découvrir le Midi,le peintre Henri Manguin. Entre les deux artistes, les divergencesesthétiques n’empêchent pas une inspiration commune, puisée dansles choses les plus simples. Le quotidien, l’éblouissement de la natureet de la lumière, la présence à leurs côtés d’une femme qui est aussi unemuse et un modèle, Jeanne pour Manguin, Marthe pour Bonnard… Unematière vivante et incarnée, que Manguin va exalter par son goût de lacouleur et une ardente palette chromatique. Ce qui fera de lui l’un desinitiateurs du fauvisme au début du XX e siècle. À travers les œuvres deses débuts, avant la guerre de 1914-1918, l’exposition du musée Bonnardrevient ainsi sur cette dimension du peintre, défricheur (avec d’autres)d’un territoire créatif où volent en éclats les savantes harmonies coloréesdu passé pour instaurer un climat pictural plus sauvage.This summer the Musée Bonnard,located in the hills above Le Cannet,has made space on its hanging railsfor the work of one of Bonnard’sfriends. The friend in question is HenriManguin, the painter who revealed theMidi region of France to Bonnard. Inspite of aesthetic differences the twofriends drew from a shared inspirationwhich they found in the simple thingsof life: daily routine, the dazzlingbeauty of nature and light and thepresence at their sides of a womanwho was both muse and modelTHE WIZARD OFCOLOUR(Jeanne for Manguin and Marthe forBonnard). Manguin was to exalt thisliving subject matter through his tastefor colour and a palette of fiery hues.This made him one of the foundersof Fauvism in the early 20th century.The exhibition at the Musée Bonnardillustrates this aspect of the painterthrough his early work prior to the1914-1918 war.
