The first phase or that of San Vincenzo
Minore (8th century AD)
After an initial accommodation in an abandoned late-
Roman farm, the monastery's expansion began among
emerging Samnite and Roman ruins. Until the 870's, the
coenoby hosted over one hundred monks, with property
and prestige, becoming a great aristocratic Lombard foundation,
with land and artisan and cultural workshops.
After the first half of the century, from the cultural centre
and its scriptorium came the works of Ambrogio
Autperto, a monk from Provence who arrived in 740 AD,
including his comment on the Apocalypse and “acute religious
writings that contributed to the introduction of
Mary Mediator's veneration in the Western world”. San
Vincenzo was, at the time, one of the few monasteries
which, besides salvaging and conserving culture, produced
prestigious cultural works.
