At the beginning of the 12th century, the monks of
San Vincenzo recorded the history of the monastery
from its birth in a chronicle. They had to use several
different sources and testimonies that were difficult
to obtain since the Saracens had destroyed everything
in 881. The chronicle is called the Chronicon
Vulturnense and is kept in the Vatican Library
(Barb. Lat. 2724).
This volume includes translated excerpts referring to
the period of reconstruction (10th-11th centuries).
Reconstruction took place on two levels, borrowing
and incastellamento, that is, the building of villages
authorized by the civil authorities.
