Le “mura delle fate”
Le fortificazioni sannitiche
di Monte San
Paolo, secondo
l’ipotesi più
accreditata,
apparterrebbero alla
città sannita di
Aquilonia, nota nella
letteratura romana
antica ma non ancora
localizzata con
certezza sul territorio.
Monte San Paolo si
trova sulla strada che
da Isernia conduce
fino a Sora, sul Liri, il
fiume che segnò
inizialmente (354
a.C.) il confine delle
aree di influenza tra
Roma (a nord) e il
Sannio (a sud). Le
mura delle fate, come
sono state chiamate
dall’archeologo
Michele Raddi, che
Pubblicazione su
Aquilonia (Pro Loco)
per primo le ha
individuate sulla
vetta del monte, sono
imponenti e lunghe
all’incirca sei
chilometri, e si collocano
a protezione di
circa 220 ettari di territorio.
Volturno Valley
Cross-Roads
Colli a Volturno stands
in the middle of the
important roads of the
S.S. 158 and S.S. 85
towards Rome, Naples
and Pescara. On Mount
S. Paolo there are
remains of megalithic
walls some
Cinta muraria di Monte S. Paolo. (da M. Raddi)
Colli a Volturno - 75
chilometres long.
Probably Colli is the
ancient Aquilonia of the
Samnites. Its development
is linked to S.
Vincenzo al Volturno
Abbey (about the X
century). The centre
was feud of Pandone
family during the XV
century; in the XVII
century it was of
Carmignano family,
whereas in the XIX century
Colli began
Capoluogo di Governo
including Pizzone,
Scapoli, Rocchetta,
Cerro, Castellone and
San Vincenzo. Here S.
Leonardo Church and S.
Maria Assunta Church
can be seen. Besides you
can see Mount S.
Angelo necropolis and
Raddi old Mulino and
you can walk along
Mount S. Paolo paths
or along Volturno River
banks. Worth to sportsmen
you can find a
comunal sports plant.
The ”legendary” city
of Aquilonia
Samnitic fortifications
on Mount San Paolo
should probably belong
to the ancient city of
Aquilonia. Mount San
Paolo stands out on the
River Liri that marked
the border between the
Roman and Samnite
territories. The “Fairy
Walls” are huge and 6
Km long. They were
erected in defence of
around 220 ha of land.
