Survey detects drop in home
consumption of rice and blackbeans
from 2002 to 2009,
suggesting that Brazilian people
have acquired new habits
The rice and black-beans combination, basic
items in the diet of most Brazilians, seems
to have lost its allure, compared to the past, at
least, in homemade meals. The Family Budgets
Survey (POF), by the Brazilian Institute of
Geography and Statistics (IBGE), published in
December 2010, shows a decline in the consumption
of both cereals in the 2002 – 2009
period. On the other hand, the survey identified
a soaring trend in the purchase of industrialized
food and beverage, particularly beer
and soft drink.
According to the IBGE report, home consumption
of rice dropped 40.5% over the period
that was analyzed, from 24.5 kilos per
person/year to 14.6 kilos. Nonetheless, the
fall in the consumption of black-beans was not
