Survey detects drop in home<br />
consumption of rice and blackbeans<br />
from 2002 to 2009,<br />
suggesting that Brazilian people<br />
have acquired new habits<br />
The rice and black-beans combination, basic<br />
items in the diet of most Brazilians, seems<br />
to have lost its allure, compared to the past, at<br />
least, in homemade meals. The Family Budgets<br />
Survey (POF), by the Brazilian Institute of<br />
Geography and Statistics (IBGE), published in<br />
December 2010, shows a decline in the consumption<br />
of both cereals in the 2002 – 2009<br />
period. On the other hand, the survey identified<br />
a soaring trend in the purchase of industrialized<br />
food and beverage, particularly beer<br />
and soft drink.<br />
According to the IBGE report, home consumption<br />
of rice dropped 40.5% over the period<br />
that was analyzed, from 24.5 kilos per<br />
person/year to 14.6 kilos. Nonetheless, the<br />
fall in the consumption of black-beans was not<br />
