National capital industry operating worldwide, Selgron
completes 20 years since its foundation and exports to upwards
of 40 countries. At present, it is the only Latin American
company that offers integrated solutions in grading, selecting,
packing and electronic groupings to several different
industries. To transform Brazil into a leader in solutions for
these segments, the company invests in research and development
to offer advanced technology and add value to the
products of the companies its serves.
Based in Blumenau (SC), Selgron is leader in several selection
markets, like cashew nuts, black-beans, rice and coffee.
Its vast and modern industrial park covers 200 thousand
square meters, with seven thousand square meters under roof.
In 2011, it celebrates the amount of 185 thousand selecting
channels installed around the globe. After going through a
selection process most kernels are packed and grouped into
bales by means of equipment built by the company itself.

Bortolini, director at Selgron.
The year is also marked with the launch of the first
Agrupadora FuturaStock – GV, specific for huge volumetric
products and destined for different markets, like animal feed
and cereal crops. The equipment allows for the use of 1,800
millimeter bonines. Another operation started in 2011, consisting
in the launch of the Agility packer with a spiral proportioner.
The novelty meets the need of the powder food
packaging market, like rice flour, chocolate-based products,
milk and juices.
Another highlight of the company was the global launch,
in 2010, of the first Image Classifier specific for the rice industry.
The equipment analyzes size, color and shape of every
kernel, generating precise and instant reports. Since its foundation
in 1991, the company has been entering into partnerships
and stimulating internal research work to improve the
technology of its equipment. “We acquired the expertise to
develop equipment to select any type of kernel”, Bortolini
points out.
AGREEMENT Since 2003, Selgron maintains a technology-industrial
partnership with the Japanese multinational
Satake, which gave the company the chance to be the only
Brazilian company to manufacture a selection machine
equipped with a high resolution chamber (CCD). Satake has
an experience of more than one hundred years in the production
of equipment for the food industry and played an essential
role in the development of rice processing technology
in the world.
It serves clients in 140 countries in the five continents.
Currently, CCD is the most modern system for food selection.
In Brazil, after the agreement with the Japanese corporation,
there was technology transference from CCD to Selgron, leading
to advances in kernel selecting machines. The partnership
paves the way for doing research into the system and
for improving the optical selection system and its applicability
in agroindustries. Selgron director Arildo Marcos Bortolini
understands that the know-how of CCD created a watershed
for both the national industry and agroindustry, dependant
on imported solutions. The technology incorporated by the
Brazilian people matched the Japanese technology, but with
one difference: more competitive prices. On the other hand,
Satake sells AlphaScan equipment, manufactured by Selgron,
all over the world. The CCD technology raises the capacity of
the machine to four thousand pictures per second, thus capturing
any kind of kernel flaws, including microscopic flaws, of
the kernel that go through the selecting machine.
The technical agreement gives Brazilian researchers access
to the technology development centers of Satake in Japan,
the United States and Europe. “Satake’s P&D centers are the
most advanced in the world and the chance for our technicians
to carry out research in these places is important if the
technology is to be customized in accordance with the needs
of our national agroindustry”, concludes Carlos Bieging, research
director at Selgron.
