Santa Catarina<br />

has consolidated its position<br />

as second biggest<br />

rice producer in Brazil and,<br />

given the circumstances,<br />

has a lot to celebrate<br />

Although <strong>do</strong>wn an estimated 1.1% from the previous year, the<br />

2010/11 rice crop in Santa Catarina is expected to reach 1.045<br />

million tons, second biggest production volume among all rice<br />

producing States in Brazil. The State, where the pre-germinated<br />

cultivation system pre<strong>do</strong>minates, has practically reached its full<br />

production capacity and cultivated a total of 150.4 thousand<br />

hectares in the current crop, up 0.5% from the previous year. It<br />

is estimated that the limit for the area to be cultivated is 156<br />

thousand hectares, which includes areas now devoted to other<br />

crops, or a shift to dry land production schemes.<br />

During the current cycle, the production volume is supposed to<br />

drop, mainly by virtue of the unfavorable climate conditions in South<br />

Brazil. Excessive precipitation affected the kernel formation process<br />

and resulted into a 1.6-percent smaller crop, compared to last year.<br />

Harvest per area, which is historically the highest in Brazil, receded<br />

from 7,060 kilos per hectare to 6,950 kilos/ha, according to the seventh<br />

survey conducted by the National Supply Company (Conab).<br />

Vanir Zanatta, president of the Agriculture and Livestock<br />

Cooperative in Jacinto Macha<strong>do</strong> (Cooperaja), comments that the<br />

crop frustration in South Santa Catarina exceeds 10% in some<br />

fields. This figure <strong>do</strong>es not worry the industry but is a concern for
