Proud to
be second
Santa Catarina
has consolidated its position
as second biggest
rice producer in Brazil and,
given the circumstances,
has a lot to celebrate
Although down an estimated 1.1% from the previous year, the
2010/11 rice crop in Santa Catarina is expected to reach 1.045
million tons, second biggest production volume among all rice
producing States in Brazil. The State, where the pre-germinated
cultivation system predominates, has practically reached its full
production capacity and cultivated a total of 150.4 thousand
hectares in the current crop, up 0.5% from the previous year. It
is estimated that the limit for the area to be cultivated is 156
thousand hectares, which includes areas now devoted to other
crops, or a shift to dry land production schemes.
During the current cycle, the production volume is supposed to
drop, mainly by virtue of the unfavorable climate conditions in South
Brazil. Excessive precipitation affected the kernel formation process
and resulted into a 1.6-percent smaller crop, compared to last year.
Harvest per area, which is historically the highest in Brazil, receded
from 7,060 kilos per hectare to 6,950 kilos/ha, according to the seventh
survey conducted by the National Supply Company (Conab).
Vanir Zanatta, president of the Agriculture and Livestock
Cooperative in Jacinto Machado (Cooperaja), comments that the
crop frustration in South Santa Catarina exceeds 10% in some
fields. This figure does not worry the industry but is a concern for
