ABSTRACT<br />

Currently, acci<strong>de</strong>nts and violence have taken an epi<strong>de</strong>mic form in Brazil. Among them,<br />

the transport acci<strong>de</strong>nt is an outstanding in magnitu<strong>de</strong>, both the number of <strong>de</strong>aths as nonfatal<br />

victims, who <strong>de</strong>mand health services at all levels of complexity. To better<br />

un<strong>de</strong>rstand the conditions of health, the World Health Organization <strong>de</strong>veloped the ICF,<br />

also with the purpose of standardizing a language with regard to impairment and<br />

disability. The research objective was to analyze the use of the ICF in the classification<br />

of disabilities resulting from traffic acci<strong>de</strong>nts in patients seen at the Center for<br />

Comprehensive Rehabilitation Dom Aquino Corrêa, Cuiabá – Mato Grosso. A<br />

prospective exploratory case series study was performed with patients of this unit,<br />

victims of traffic acci<strong>de</strong>nts for at least a year. The collection took place between April<br />

and October 2010, involving 69 patients. Data were obtained from the physical therapy<br />

evaluation, collected in a specific form and co<strong>de</strong>d according to the health dimensions of<br />

ICF. The circumstances of the acci<strong>de</strong>nt and injury were co<strong>de</strong>d according to the<br />

International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-<br />

10). The mean age was 31.7 years (SD = 10.2), predominantly male (65.2%) and<br />

motorcyclists (71.0%). The body area most affected was the lower limb (42.0%), and<br />

fractures were the most frequent injury (44.9%). It was observed that in relation to<br />

disability in the structure of the body, most were related to movement (93.5%), out of<br />

which 45.3% were in full <strong>de</strong>gree. Regarding the functions of the body examined, 68.1%<br />

showed <strong>de</strong>ficiencies in gait and of these 51.1% were mild or mo<strong>de</strong>rate, 79.7%<br />

complained about pain, and 40.0% were of severe <strong>de</strong>gree, 39.1% had <strong>de</strong>ficiencies of<br />

sensory functions, while 63.0% were mild or mo<strong>de</strong>rate and 91.3% had <strong>de</strong>creased joint<br />

mobility, 63.4% of these were severe or complete, 92.8% had <strong>de</strong>creased muscle<br />

strength, and 53,1% were severe or complete. The reassessment showed improvements<br />

in disability levels of patients in all categories studied. The data shows that the use of<br />

ICF is extremely important as it provi<strong>de</strong>s a neutral language and guiding for
