To investigate the occurrence of alterations inthe weight and the diameter of the eyes, and the retinalarea of weaned rats that were submitted to treatment withlevodopa or acetylcysteine, without visual privation. Methods: It was used 31 Wistar rats, that were weaned 21days after they were born. Everyday, between 10 and 14hours,the gavage was made on those animals, with apolystyrene tube introduced into their mouth, until itreached their stomach, so that they received the specificsubstance, forming three groups: levodopa, acetylcysteineand water. After 14 days of treatment, those animals weresacrificed, in order to retreat their eyeball (enucleation),so that they could be weighted and had the anterior-posterior(AP) and equatorial (EQ) diameter measured.Theeyeballs were fixed with 1% paraformaldehyde.Afterwards, the retinas were dissected, opened above agelatinized blade, so that the retinal area could bemeasured. Results: The levodopa and the acetylcysteinegroups showed mean weight, ocular diameter and retinalarea values, similar to those of the control group thatreceived distilled water. Conclusions: Anatomicmodifications were not detected in this experiment. Thestudies with growing animals are important in order toprovide information about certain substances, so that, byknowing their effects on the eyeball growth, with or withoutvisual privation, they can be used in treatment forchildhood amblyopia. Keywords: Levodopa;Acetylcysteine; Eye; Retinal;Biometry;Animal; Rats.REFERÊNCIAS1.
