Foreword
The Statistical Yearbook has in 1956
again been subject to considerable changes.
T his applies particularly to the chapter on
population. Greater uniform ity in population
figures has been strived at by using when
possible data on resident population. The
choice of rates and ratios follows closer than
before the needs of current practice. Through
rearrangement of m aterial and elim ination
of some series of secondary importance the
number of tables on population has been
reduced by 14.
Also m any other tables have been renewed.
In industrial statistics the Standard International
Trade Classification has been applied.
Am ong other changes the tables concerning
the B ank of F inland, the air traffic and the
universities m ay be mentioned. There are
in all eight new tables. They include data on
population by educational level and age, production
of dairies by agricultural societies,
traffic volume on F innish roads, work tribunals
and elections in F inland. Two new
tables in the international section show government
budgets and unemployment. Three
tables have been omitted. They concerned
rural merchants, hydro-electric resources and
plants and schools for the feeble-minded. The
changes have this time not entailed any
enlargement of the yearbook.
The tables in the international section,
which also appear in the statistical yearbooks
of the other Scandinavian countries,
are the result of co-operation between the
Central Statistical Bureaux of Denm ark,
F inland, N orw ay and Sweden.
