in the conditions of the common people. He appeared at all types of events, covering<br />
different sports, agriculture, industrial exhibitions, and much more. He had the common<br />
touch and the population could relate to him. He fulfilled their expectations which<br />
emphasized the connection between the monarch and the people. He was accessible and<br />
yet stood out.<br />
The royal visits to the market towns of Jutland and Schleswig-Holstein not only<br />
revealed the population’s expectations of the king, but also exposed the royal self-<br />
perception. These visits played an important role in the continuation of the Danish<br />
monarchy as they kept the monarchy aware of population’s expectations and enabled the<br />
monarch to adapt to present conditions and the surrounding society and hence ensured the<br />
continuous success of the Danish monarchy.<br />
