Abstract
The present thesis deals with how shading devices can be analysed when choosing a shading
device.
The investigation takes origin in four solar shading devices: a screen, a venetian blind, a film
and glass lamellas.
The investigations consist of three main parts: A characterisation of the solar shading
devices regarding thermal and visual properties, a full-scale experiment with test persons and
finally simulations of the lighting conditions in the program Desktop Radiance.
The characterisation of the solar shading devices takes origin in measurements of the
spectral properties with BYG DTU's goniospectrometer. From this the thermal and visual
properties are determined. Furthermore, the daylight factor and the reduction of the sky
luminance in the rooms, where the four shading devices were mounted, were measured.
In the full-scale experiment the test persons evaluated the visual conditions in the rooms,
where the four solar shading devices were mounted, and evaluated the view through the
shading devices. In connection measurements of the visual and thermal condition were
carried out.
The variation of the lighting conditions throughout the year in rooms with the four shading
devices was investigated through simulations with the program Desktop Radiance.
The investigation showed that the users evaluation of the lighting conditions, the
measurements and the simulations were in agreement. However, the users evaluated the
conditions slightly better than expected from the measurements and simulations.
It was found that the view to the outdoor surroundings mainly are influenced by the solar
shadings breaking of the surroundings and the sharpness of the surroundings seen through
the shading device. The change of colour caused by the shading devices has a secondary
influence on the view through.
The venetian blind at 45 inclination was found to be the most suitable to obtain good visual
and thermal conditions throughout the year. In return the view through was poor. The film
and the glass lamellas caused good views to the outside, but on the other hand the film
caused poor thermal conditions and the glass lamellas caused poor visual conditions. The
screen caused good thermal and visual conditions, however, it needed to be fully closed, and
the view through became poor.
With this thesis it has been shown how solar shading devices can be characterised so that the
proper shading device can be chosen.
