The Nordbahnhof, situated in Vienna’s second district,
covers 75 hectares, making it one of the largest
and most important development zones in the city
centre of Vienna. It is bordered by streets lined with
houses, namely Lassallestraße, Vorgartenstraße,
Engerthstraße, Innstraße, Dresdner Straße, Nordbahnstraße
and Praterstern.
Thanks to its location at the crossroads between the
inner city and Donaucity, the urban development at
Nordbahnhof will prove a boost for the entire city
and for Vienna’s second district (also known as
Leopoldstadt) in particular. The new city area at
Nordbahnhof will act as an image-boosting contrast
to the historical quarters of Leopoldstadt.
The railway tracks running alongside Nordbahnstraße
currently act as a stark barrier to the neighbouring
residential areas which date back to the
Gründerzeit. The site directly borders Vienna’s 20th
district to the north-west, including the urban development
potential of the Nordwestbahnhof site. To
the north-east, the Nordbahnhof is just two building
lengths away from the Danube. The building development
on Lassallestraße which was completed in
the early 1980s is located on the border to Stuwerviertel,
a part of the 2 nd district which is also from the
Gründerzeit.
A new all-day primary school and a kindergarten
were built on around 14,000 m² at the heart of this
new city area, directly beside Rudolf-Bednar Park.
The Nordbahnhof education campus brings together
an all-day primary school with 17 classes
for 420 children as well as a kindergarten with
11 groups for 250 children – all under one roof. It
therefore serves as a complete educational facility
for children aged between 0 and 10. Up to 80
teachers and educators are working at the school.
