INTERVIEW
Connecting
People
The British Council
has a long tradition
of bringing the
culture of the UK
to the world. In the
interview for
SOCIETY director
Martin Gilbert
spoke about the
British Council’s
Austria.
Interview: Tanja Tauchhammer
For how long have you been
director of the British Council
in Austria?
I have been Director of
the British Council in Austria
since 2011. I took up this
position from David Alderdice who transferred
to another British Council appointment.
What is the main focus of your work
as director?
We are a cultural relations organization
and in Austria our focus is primarily on
English, English language examinations
(Aptis, Cambridge and IELTS) and Study in
the UK. Our role is to support the promotion
of UK English, Education and the Arts
in Austria. We work closely with the British
Embassy and UKTI. We support selected
projects in the Arts such as the Contemporary
Talks series at the Kunsthistorisches
Museum Wien. Two recent highlights have
been the talk by Edmund de Waal – well
known for his book The Hare with Amber
