ties whether it is in the dominant western cultures in North America
or in Chinese culture, for example, so discrimination towards peo-
Geoffrey Reaume: The worth of historical interpretation for Dis-
ability Studies is to provide more people with an awareness of a
past that most people, including people with disabilities, don't know
exists largely because it hasn't been properly researched or stud-
ied. By studying all aspects of disability history from ancient times
to the modern era, we can show the patterns or discontinuities in
the way people with disabilities have been thought about and treat-
ed in history, and also understand how people with disabilities have
acted as real people in the past, while also providing important
lessons for the present. It is important for the field of Disability
Studies to have a solid grounding in our collective and diverse past
to give everyone undertaking this study a solid grounding in a past
which is still largely unknown, both for knowledge's sake on its own
merits, and as a way of learning about how we arrived where we
are today. It is also important for the field of History (which is
where I earned all of my university degrees) to undertake serious
studies in the History of Disability in the hope that one day histori-
ans will include disability as part of our regular interpretations
along with gender, class and race, in how human beings interact
with one another. This can only enrich Disability Studies and Histo-
ry while providing a wider awareness of the past and relate it to the
present. In so doing this historical knowledge can help to challenge
discriminatory practices which have permeated history, in order to
