The Alice Guy Retrospective comes to Hungary from a world premiere at the St. Louis
International Film Festival in the United States. This program is aimed at bringing the life and work
of Alice Guy Blache out of obscurity and introducing her to audiences that are unaware of her
extraordinary contributions to the world of cinema
Dr. Alison McMahan, author of the book: Alice Guy Blaché: Lost Visionary of the Cinema, the foremost
Guy Blaché scholar will hold a lecture to the festival audience. The original musical soundtrack
that underscores the film "Making and American Citizen" is composed and performed by
Dr. Barbara Harbach, Professor of Music at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. The program is
curated by Rita M. Csapó-Sweet, Ed.D., Associate Professor, Department of Dance, Theater and
Media Arts University of Missouri - St. Louis
There are three films in the programme:
MAKING AN AMERICAN CITIZEN, 1912. A couple comes to the United States and the husband
brings with him customs from the "old country." He abuses his wife in front of American men
who intercede on his wife's behalf. Finally, he must learn his lesson by spending time in jail for
his offenses. When he comes out he is a changed man, an a "real" American.
A FOOL AND HIS MONEY, 15 min., 1912. Featuring an all-black cast led by James Russell, the "Cakewalk King." This romantic comedy endearingly
portrays the adventures and misadventures of a young man who thinks he can get rich quick.
FOR LOVE OF THE FLAG, 1912. A melodrama about "American values." A man loses his job in the military industry after he is accused of lying
(which he did not do). They lose their home and his wife has to support the family by sewing cloths for strangers. As their situation gets worse,
the man is tempted to betray his country by selling military secrets to a foreign country. The child in the film is played by Magda Foy.
Significance of the project: Alice Guy Blaché was the first woman filmmaker, and her films and their importance need to claim their rightful
place in the history of cinematography. 2004 marks the centennial of the first screening of Guy Blaché's films at the St. Louis World's Fair in
1904, and is an ideal time to create an Alice Guy Blaché retrospective at the St. Louis International Film Festival. The retrospective will then travel
to other cities and countries. It can serve as a good will ambassador by introducing people to this remarkable woman (born in France) who
became one of America's most important cultural pioneers.
Background: After Alice Guy Blaché moved from Paris to Fort Lee, New Jersey in 1907, she became the first woman to own her own production
studio (Solax), and directed and supervised production of over 330 silent films in four years (1910-1914). She was the first woman to direct
any fiction film, pioneered the fictional film genre, and was the first woman screenwriter and film director. Guy Blaché invented many new techniques
for turning the story of a screenplay into a motion picture. She was also first to produce "talking pictures" with the chromophone invented
by Gaumont and Demeny. Guy Blaché helped develop Metro Pictures which became Metro-Goldwin-Mayer. At the age of 78, she was
honored at the Cinematheque Français in France as the first woman filmmaker in the world and made a knight of the French Legion of Honor,
but she died forgotten in Mahwah, New Jersey in 1968.

Az Alice Guy Retrospektíve a St Louis-i Nemzetközi Filmfesztiválon történt premier után érkezik Magyarországra, a MEDIAWAVE Fesztiválra. A
program célja, hogy bemutassa Alice Guy Blaché életét és munkásságát a közönségnek, akik talán nem is tudják, milyen kivételes és rendkívüli
kincse volt õ a mozi történetének. A retrospektívet három professzor hölgy hozta el nekünk St Louis-ból: Dr. Alison McMahan, Alice Guy
munkásságának legismertebb szakértõje, az "Alice Guy Blaché: Lost Visionary of the Cinema" c. könyv szerzõje fog elõadást tartani a fesztiválközönségnek.
A "Making the American Citizen" c. film alá Barbara Harbach, a Missouri egyetem zeneprofesszora komponált zenét. A program
kurátora: Rita M. Csapó-Sweet a Missouri Egyetem Tánc-, Színház-, és Médiatanszékének docense.
A programban szereplõ három film:
MAKING AN AMERICAN CITIZEN / MI TESZI AZ AMERIKAI POLGÁRT, 1912. A pár megérkezik Amerikába és a férj magával hozza régi hazája szokásait. Egy
amerikai férfi elõtt megalázza a feleségét, aki az asszony oldalára áll. Végül börtönbe kerül vétke miatt, hogy tanuljon az esetbõl. Aztán teljesen
új emberként szabadul, "igazi" amerikai válik belõle.
A FOOL AND HIS MONEY / EGY BOLOND ÉS A PÉNZE, 1912. A csak fekete szereplõkbõl álló társaság vezére James Russel. Ez a kedves romantikus
vígjáték egy fiatalember szerencsés és kevésbé szerencsés kalandjairól szól, aki azt hiszi, egykettõre meggazdagodhat.
FOR LOVE OF THE FLAG / A SZERELEM ZÁSZLÓJÁÉRT, 1912 Az amerikai értékek melodrámája. Egy férfi elveszti a munkáját, miután olyan hazugsággal
vádolják, amit el sem követett. Elveszti az otthonát és a feleségének varrásból kell eltartania a családot. Helyzetük egyre romlik, a férfi arra kényszerül,
hogy katonai titkokat adjon el idegen országoknak. A gyermek szerepében Magda Foy látható.
A project jelentõsége: Alice Guy Blaché az elsõ nõi filmes, filmjei és munkássága méltó helyet érdemelnek a filmm vészet történetében. 1904ben
mutatták be elsõ filmjét a St. Louis-i világkiállításon, és ennek 100. évfordulóját ünnepelték 2004-ben ugyanott, a St. Louis-i Nemzetközi Film
Fesztiválon. A retrospektív aztán eljut majd más városokba és országokba, hogy megismerhessék ezt a figyelemre méltó párizsi születés hölgyet,
az amerikai kultúra egyik legfontosabb úttörõjét.
Háttér: Miután Alice Guy Párizsból New Jersey-be költözött 1907-ben, õ lett az elsõ filmstúdió tulajdonos (Solax) nõ, aki több, mint 330 némafilm
gyártásában és rendezésében vett részt négy év alatt (1910-14). Õ volt az elsõ nõ, aki játékfilmet rendezett, forradalmasította a fikciós film
m faját, õ az elsõ nõi forgatókönyvíró és rendezõ. Guy Blaché számos új technikát talált fel, amivel a forgatókönyv történetet mozgóképre vitte.
Õ gyártott elõször "beszéló képeket" a Gaumont és Emeny által felfedezett kromofónnal. Részt vett a Metro Pictures - a késõbbi Metro-Goldwin
Mayer - alapításában. 78 éves korában a francia légió tiszteletbeli lovagjává avatták. 1968-ban halt meg Mahwah-ban, New Yersey-ben.
