venues in Moscow, Tallinn, and<br />

Kiev were connected to the ACS "Information"<br />

computer, including 129<br />

display stations, each consisting of an<br />

IBM 3275 video terminal and an IBM<br />

3284 printer; ten high-speed IBM 3780<br />

printers.<br />

The IBM 3275 terminals were divided<br />

into three groups:<br />

Input devices. Used to enter information<br />

about competitors and progress<br />

of competitions from all the<br />

venues, including the Olympic Village,<br />

into the computer. They were installed<br />

at competition sites in the areas of<br />

secretariats of technical officials and<br />

in the Olympic Village at the registration<br />

point.<br />

Output devices. They automatically<br />

printed out results of competitions<br />

held only at a given venue and were<br />

installed in press subcentre areas<br />

close to copiers.<br />

Inquiry terminals. They were designed<br />

to produce diverse reference<br />

information on request and were installed<br />

in the Main Press Centre, at all<br />

press subcentres, in the Olympic Television<br />

and Radio Centre (OTVRC),<br />

Television Technical Centre (TTC),<br />

Olympic Village and at the Soviet<br />

News Agency (TASS).<br />

High-speed printers produced "all<br />

about everything" information. They<br />

were installed in the Main Press<br />

Centre, OTVRC, Olympic Village, and<br />

TASS. The latter needed the inquiry<br />

terminals and high-speed printers to<br />

serve the SIMTA-80 system.<br />

134 remote terminals were operated<br />

from July 20 through August 3,<br />

including:<br />

input terminals<br />

output terminals<br />

inquiry terminals<br />

high-speed printers<br />

— 27<br />

— 5<br />

and 9 local terminals in the Main<br />

Computer Centre.<br />

A maximum of 127 terminals was<br />

engaged during July 23. Up to 102<br />

terminals (44 of them, inquiry terminals)<br />

worked simultaneously.<br />

ACS "Information" registered participants,<br />

officials, and referees. Data<br />

were entered and processed for the<br />

following categories:<br />

F Category—national team<br />

members;<br />

C Category—chefs-de-mission,<br />

their assistants, and Olympic attachés.<br />

D Category—jury members,<br />

judges, referees, time-keepers, and inspectors.<br />

The above-mentioned were registered<br />

in two stages at the Olympic<br />

Village from July 3 till August 3. At the<br />
