Hockey<br />

The Olympic hockey competition<br />

was held from July 20 through 31 at<br />

the Dynamo Minor Arena (10,000<br />

seats) and the Young Pioneers<br />

Stadium (5,000 seats).<br />

In keeping with the rules of the<br />

International Hockey Federation (FIH),<br />

the pitches measured 91.5 by 55<br />

metres. They were covered with Polygrass<br />

artificial turf supplied by<br />

J. F. Adolff AG of the FRG.<br />

Olympic Super De-Luxe balls were<br />

supplied by Hans Raj Mahajan and<br />

Sons Pvt., Ltd of India, who was the<br />

Official Supplier to the Games, and<br />

goal nets and pitch border nets by<br />

Bridport-Gundry of Great Britain.<br />

Soviet-made equipment and implements,<br />

such as goals, targets, posts<br />

for dribbling practice, etc. were also<br />

used for competition and training.<br />

The score-keeping equipment was<br />

manufactured in the USSR. The<br />

Dynamo Minor Arena had the Elektronika<br />

multi-purpose bulb letter-digital<br />

scoreboard (USSR) with 8 lines of 32<br />

characters each. The scoreboard displayed<br />

teams and lists of players, time,<br />

score during a game, and names of<br />

scorers. A specialised scoreboard at<br />

the Young Pioneers Stadium, pro-<br />

duced by VISTI (USSR) displayed<br />

teams, time of play, score, and period.<br />

The FIH Council headed by the<br />

President was responsible for the<br />

competition.The FIH appointed members<br />

of the jury of appeal and technical<br />

officials including umpires, 43 altogether<br />

from 16 countries, among<br />

them 4 from the USSR.<br />

There were 61 Soviet support officials.<br />

The offices of the FIH were located<br />

in the administration building of the<br />

Dynamo Stadium.<br />

6 men's teams and—for the first<br />

time in Olympic history—6 women's<br />

teams took part in the competition.<br />

Men's teams first played against<br />

each other in a round. Then the first<br />

two teams played for gold and silver<br />

medals. Teams placed third and fourth<br />

contested for bronze medals and<br />

those placed fifth and sixth met once<br />

again to determine their final standing<br />

in the tournament.<br />

Women's teams played against<br />

each other in one round.<br />

192 competitors from 9 countries<br />

participated in the competition.<br />

There were no protests from the<br />

participating teams.
